August is a major month for amateur radio, featuring key global events like the International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend, on-air contests, and major conventions.
Major August Events and Activities
International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend (ILLW): Held on the third full weekend of August, operators activate portable stations at hundreds of lighthouses worldwide.
ARRL 222 MHz and Up Distance Contest: Held during the first full weekend of August to test high-band weak signal contacts.
Rookie Roundup: Held on the third Sunday of August, designed specifically to help operators licensed for three years or less build operating skills.
10 GHz &Up Contest (Leg 1): Starts the third full weekend of August.
Key Hamfests and Conventions
Northeast HamXposition: ARRL New England Division Convention in Marlborough, Massachusetts, held August 13–16.
Huntsville Hamfest: Host of the ARRL National Convention in Huntsville, Alabama, scheduled for August 22–23.
Wyoming HamCon: ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Convention in Casper, Wyoming, running August 28–30.
